Charred timber and low winter sun. A house designed around the four hours of daylight it receives in January, and the long glow of the eighteen hours it does not.

Nordlicht was designed around scarcity. Oslo gives this slope roughly four usable hours of daylight in January, and the plan spends all of them on the two rooms that matter: the kitchen and the long room above it.

Charred timber, warm core

The exterior is shou sugi ban pine, nearly black and almost entirely without openings on the north and east faces. The interior reverses it completely — birch ply, wool, and a soapstone hearth that runs the full height of the house.

A separate studio sits at the top of the plot, wired and heated, currently used as a recording room. Ski storage and a drying room open directly off the entrance.
