Material Honesty Is Not the Same as Raw Concrete

Somewhere in the last decade the phrase started to mean one specific finish. It does not, and the confusion has produced a great many cold, unpleasant houses.

The original claim

Material honesty was an argument about not disguising one substance as another. Timber that reads as timber, brick as brick. It was never an argument that a building should feel unfinished, or that comfort is a form of dishonesty.

The best houses we list are frequently the least doctrinaire. Villa Sal uses lime-washed stone because the wall needs a metre of thermal mass, not because exposed masonry is fashionable.

A test

Ask what the material is doing structurally or thermally. If the answer is nothing, it is decoration, and decoration is fine. It is only dishonest when it is described as rigour.
